The spiritual man is one who has developed in divine things. His spirit has gained the ascendancy over his intellectual processes.
What Manner of Man Are You?
● Paul presents three distinct divisions of the human race: Jew, Gentile, and the Church of God.
● The Jew is ever a Jew, and the Gentile refers to the heathen world outside of Christ.
● The Church, the body of Christ, stands utterly alone as a new creation.
● Paul also presents three spiritual divisions of people: the natural man, the carnal man, and the spiritual man.
● The natural man has never passed out of death into life and has never been born again.
● The natural man has never been recreated or become a new creature in Christ Jesus.
● The carnal man is a new creature who has been born again but has never developed or grown.
● It is sad but true that the carnal man may remain in this condition all his life long.
● The carnal man may never develop beyond the babyhood state of the new creation.
● The carnal man is governed by his body and physical senses rather than by his spirit.
● The spiritual man has developed in divine things and has gained spiritual maturity.
● The spiritual man’s spirit has gained ascendancy over his intellectual processes.
● His spirit has also gained ascendancy over his body and physical senses.
● God governs the spiritual man through His Word.
● Each believer must examine himself to see which of these three men he is.
● We can do something about our spiritual condition once we honestly locate ourselves.
● The goal is to move from natural to carnal to spiritual through growth and development.
● God’s desire is for every believer to become a spiritual man, not remain a babe or carnal Christian.
● The natural man is the unregenerate person, the carnal man is the undeveloped believer, and the spiritual man is the mature child of God.
● The characteristics of each man determine how he responds to God, others, and life’s circumstances.
● Understanding these divisions helps believers identify where they are and what they need to do to grow.
If a man is a natural man and hasn’t been born-again, he’s not up on spiritual things. He doesn’t know anything about them, so he is down on them.
The Natural Man
Knowledge Contrasted: Revelation—Natural Human
● The natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God because they are foolishness to him.
● Spiritual things cannot be understood with the mind but are discerned or understood with the spirit.
● The natural man is the unspiritual physical man whose wisdom is earthly, sensual, and demonic.
● James describes this wisdom as earthly, natural, and devilish (demonic).
● The natural man is motivated by demons and ruled by Satan.
● This does not mean the natural man is demon-possessed, but he is under Satan’s influence.
● All who have never been born again have Satan as their god and father.
● They are in the kingdom of darkness and are ruled by Satan and demons.
● Ephesians 6:12 refers to “rulers of the darkness of this world.”
● The natural man is a Satan-ruled man.
● The carnal mind (mind of the flesh) is enmity against God and cannot please God.
● The natural man cannot please God because he is motivated by the flesh.
● The only way the flesh has expression is through its physical senses.
● Substituting the word “senses” or “physical senses” for “flesh” in Romans clarifies Paul’s teaching.
● The natural man receives not the things of God because he cannot know them.
● All knowledge the natural man has comes through his five senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch.
● His mind is actually governed by his senses.
● This is called sense knowledge or natural human knowledge.
● Born-again believers have a knowledge that is above the flesh and above the senses.
● This is revelation knowledge, which is revealed to us in the Word of God.
● Revelation knowledge is above the natural and cannot be grasped by physical senses.
● Modern theologians who are sense knowledge men repudiate revelation knowledge.
● The Bible is of the Spirit of God, not natural human knowledge.
● Holy men of old wrote as they were moved by the Spirit of God.
● A professor said, “If you can’t understand it and reason it out, forget it.”
● You cannot understand and reason out God, the virgin birth, the Holy Spirit, or divine healing with your natural mind.
● The natural man says, “Common sense will tell you,” but we walk by faith, not by sight.
● We are led by the Spirit of God, not by common sense.
● The natural man cannot understand the Bible because it is in a realm he doesn’t know.
● “What you’re not up on, you’re down on”—natural men are down on spiritual things because they are not up on them.
The Natural Walk
● The natural man walks according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air.
● He walks according to the spirit that works in the children of disobedience.
● He fulfills the desires of the flesh and of the mind.
● He is by nature a child of wrath.
● The natural man is without Christ, alienated from Israel, and a stranger from the covenants of promise.
● He has no hope and is without God in the world.
● The Gentile has no claim or hold on God today.
● As a Gentile, he has no legal standing or legal rights.
● But thank God, he can come and be born again and become a member of the body of Christ.
● Then he has a standing and has rights.
● God chose the base things of the world and things which are despised.
● The “things which are not” represented the slaves of the Roman Empire.
● They had no standing, no voice, and were just “things which are not.”
● But when they became Christians, they had a standing before God.
● The Gentiles were “not a people” but are now the people of God.
● With all their boasted culture, ability, and money, natural men have no voice or standing with God.
● Ephesians 4:17-18 describes the natural man walking in the vanity of his mind.
● He has darkened understanding and is alienated from the life of God.
● He is ignorant of spiritual things and blinded by the hardness of his heart.
● This is the picture of every person outside of Christ.
● But thank God, there is a way out and a way to God.
● Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
● There is hope for the natural man through the new birth.

The carnal man is a new creature. He has been born again. But he’s never developed or grown.
The Carnal Man
● The carnal man is the babe in Christ who has been born again but has not developed spiritually.
● When Paul wrote to the Corinthians, they were not newborn people—they should have been beyond where they were.
● The Corinthians were in the same sad condition as the Hebrew Christians who should have been teachers.
● Paul’s letter was written to born-again, Spirit-filled believers.
● The Corinthians had all the gifts of the Spirit operating in their church.
● Paul bragged on them a little first, saying they came behind in no gift.
● They had the utterance gifts, but they were all trying to talk in tongues at once.
● Spiritual gifts do not make you a full-grown Christian.
● Many people don’t understand what true spirituality really is.
● Some think being spiritual means exercising a spiritual gift, but the Corinthians had all gifts and were still carnal.
● People sometimes say of a carnal Christian giving an utterance, “That couldn’t be the Lord.”
● But carnal Christians can have the Holy Ghost and operate in spiritual gifts.
● The church at Corinth proves this beyond any doubt.
● The Greek word translated “carnal” means a man governed by his physical senses.
● Though he is born again and a new creature, he walks after the order of natural men.
● Several modern translations render it “walks as a mere man” or “walks as a common man.”
● Paul said the Corinthians had envy, strife, and divisions just like the world.
● They were walking just like world men walk because they let their flesh dominate them.
● One modern translation says “you are body-ruled” instead of “ye are carnal.”
● The outward man (the body) rules instead of the inward man (the new man in Christ).
● Too much of the time in Christians, the outward man dominates the inward.
● As long as the outward man dominates, believers remain babies and carnal.
● Some baby Christians think they are so spiritual yet live in the flesh.
● In one church, some thought it was a sin to take a bath or use deodorant.
● The author noted that this was the most worldly church he ever preached in.
● He read what Paul said about envy, jealousy, strife, and division.
● Some got so angry they were ready to fight—which proved they were carnal.
● Carnal Christians have not learned the love law nor the love walk.
● When you love one another, you won’t walk in envy, strife, jealousy, and division.
● The Corinthians were born again, filled with the Holy Ghost, and had gifts, but had not learned the love law.
● When you become spiritual, you learn to walk in divine love.
● Walking in divine love stops jealousy, strife, division, and backbiting.
● Backbiting, bitterness, and jealousy are signs of underdevelopment.
● These things are caused by selfishness.
● As long as you are selfish, sensitive, and easily hurt, you are a babe in Christ.
Growing Out of Carnality
● God wants us to grow out of the carnal state.
● There is no other way to get out of carnality except to grow out of it.
● Peter said, “Desire the sincere milk of the Word that you may grow thereby.”
● Paul said, “I have fed you with milk,” trying to get the Corinthians to grow.
● Paul did not tell them they weren’t saved—he called them carnal and babes.
● When a baby cries, hitting him over the head won’t make him grow.
● Feeding him—putting something into him—makes him grow.
● Don’t take anything out of people; put something into them.
● The Lord told the author, “Don’t beat Christians over the head. Feed them.”
● The author mentioned Tuffy, a boy who was failing in school and headed for reform school.
● Everyone told Tuffy he was no good and would never make it.
● His principal would whip him one to three times a day, but it didn’t help.
● The author’s grandfather told the principal to stop whipping him and build confidence in him instead.
● He gave Tuffy responsibility and showed he believed in him.
● Tuffy began making passing grades and eventually grew up to be a useful citizen.
● The Lord used this story to teach the author about spiritual growth.
● Paul corrected the Corinthians gently but didn’t take everything away from them.
● He bragged about what they did have and showed them there was more out there.
● He encouraged them: “Go to it! Get after it! It’s yours!”
● Don’t beat Christians over the head—feed them and give them something.
● Don’t fight other churches and other believers.
● Don’t take anything away from anybody—give them something and put something into them.
● Paul told the carnal Corinthians, “For all things are yours.”
● It all belonged to them even though they hadn’t come to the knowledge of it yet.
● They may not have grown to appreciate it, but it still belonged to them.
● “All things are yours; Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.”
● Paul didn’t take anything from them—he said, “It’s all yours!”
What else would you ever need? Get acquainted with the Holy Ghost through the Word. When you know what the Word says about Him, then you’ll know what He’ll do.
The Spiritual Man
● Paul said he could not speak to the Corinthians as unto spiritual men, which is a sad tragedy.
● The spiritual man knows what belongs to him in Christ Jesus and takes advantage of it.
● The spiritual man has drunk deeply at the fountain and fed regularly at the Lord’s table.
● The spiritual man has saturated himself in the love of God.
Knowing the Father
● The spiritual man has come to know the Father in reality, not just in doctrine.
● The author knew Jesus and was filled with the Holy Ghost but felt God could become more real to him.
● He knew in his spirit that God could become more real than his wife, children, or even the car he drove.
● This didn’t happen overnight, in one month, or even in one year.
● As he continued to fellowship with the Father through the Word and prayer, God became more and more real.
● Eventually he could say, “He is more real to me, and I know Him better than I know my wife.”
● He became more personally acquainted with God than with any natural relationship.
● He came to the place where every waking moment he was conscious of God’s presence.
● He was more conscious of God’s presence than of his wife’s presence.
Knowing the Son
● The spiritual man comes to know the Lord Jesus Christ in His great ministry at the right hand of God.
● Every born-again believer knows Jesus as Savior, but that alone will never cause you to grow.
● Just knowing Him as Savior will keep you a spiritual baby forever.
● To grow, the believer must know what he is in Christ and what Christ is in him.
● He must come to know Jesus’ present-day ministry at the right hand of the Father.
● Knowing the reality of Jesus’ present-day ministry did more for the author’s spiritual growth than anything else.
● We need to grow in knowing the reality of His ministry as High Priest, Advocate, Intercessor, Shepherd, and Lord.
● Hearing these things taught is not the same as walking in the reality of them.
● As we feed upon the truth, we come into the full knowledge of the Son of God.
● This knowledge brings us unto a perfect (mature) man.
Knowing the Holy Ghost
● The spiritual man has come to know the blessed intimacy of the Holy Spirit as revealed in the Word.
● You can be baptized with the Holy Ghost and speak in tongues and never know this intimacy.
● The baptism of the Holy Ghost has been preached incorrectly, as if it’s the end, but it’s just the beginning.
● Because of wrong thinking, believers never learn to know the Holy Spirit intimately and are cut off from growing.
● Spiritual babes are all “taken up” with the outward manifestation of speaking in tongues.
● They talk about how they “felt” and try to “feel” that way again.
● The author bases nothing on feelings and everything on the Word.
● When people lose that “feeling,” they think the Holy Ghost is gone, but He isn’t.
● Jesus said the Holy Ghost would abide with us forever.
● The Holy Ghost doesn’t come and go based on our feelings or failures.
● David, after committing adultery and murder, prayed, “Take not thy holy spirit from me.”
● If the Holy Spirit had left David, he could never have gotten repentance or come back to God.
● If the Holy Ghost ever left you, it would be the end of you too.
● He is still there to show you the way back to repentance.
● When the author missed God and sinned, it wasn’t the Holy Ghost who condemned him—it was his own spirit.
● Jesus said He didn’t come to condemn the world but to save it.
● The Holy Ghost was there to open the Word and show the ministry of Jesus, even when the author had failed.
● He was so sweet and gentle to lead, show the way out, and bring the way back.
…as Indweller
● 1 John 4:4 says, “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
● We need to become conscious of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence.
● We must learn to walk in the light of the Word on this subject.
● In times of crisis, we will remain calm because we know the Bible is true whether it “seems like” it or not.
● When crisis comes, we don’t have to run around frantically seeking help.
● Help is available because the Greater One is inside us.
● The Holy Spirit shows us exactly what to do in every crisis of life.
● He rises in us to give illumination to our mind and direction to our spirit.
● But He cannot do this if we are not sufficiently acquainted with Him to recognize it.
● If you are born again and filled with the Holy Ghost, you have all you’ll ever need inside you.
● The Greek word translated Comforter also means Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby.
● What else would you ever need?
● Get acquainted with the Holy Ghost through the Word.
● When you know what the Word says about Him, you’ll know what He’ll do and how He’ll manifest Himself.
● You’ll know how to yield to Him and walk with Him, and you can grow spiritually.
…as Teacher
● 1 Corinthians 2:12 says we received the Holy Spirit that we might know the things freely given to us of God.
● Jesus said the Holy Spirit would teach us, guide us into all truth, show us things to come, and receive of Christ and show it to us.
● The “things freely given” are all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.
● Paul spoke wisdom among them that are mature, not the wisdom of this world or of dethroned powers.
● Jesus dethroned the devil and all spiritual forces in His death, burial, and resurrection.
● Adam sold out to the devil, making him the god of this world.
● Jesus dethroned these powers, and they cannot rule over us anymore.
● We can rule over them in the name of Jesus.
● This wisdom is not in man’s words but what the Holy Ghost teaches.
● It is an unveiling of spiritual things that cannot be seen with the natural eye.
● The disciples saw Jesus dying but didn’t understand why until the Holy Ghost taught them.
● This understanding is an unveiling by the aid and energy of the Spirit of God Himself.
His Inheritance
● The spiritual man knows his inheritance in Christ.
● Colossians 1:12 says we give thanks to the Father who made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance.
● Another translation says God gave us the ability to enjoy our share of the inheritance.
● The spiritual man knows what his inheritance is in the light of God’s Word.
● He knows he has the ability to enjoy it.
His Ability
● God has given us our Ability—He is our Ability.
● This Ability reveals itself in unveiling the treasures of grace that belong to us.
● Acts 1:8 says we shall receive power after the Holy Ghost comes upon us.
● The Greek word translated “power” here also means “ability.”
● The author received the baptism of the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues but didn’t feel any more “power.”
● His congregation could see he had more ability to preach than before.
● We’ve overlooked the ability, trying to find the power.
● John called it an unction and an anointing that is in you.
● When you know the Ability of God is in there, you know what it means that “Greater is he that is in you.”
● When you hit a hard place, you can lean back on Him instead of trying to pray the power down or work it up.
● You can lean back and laugh and shout all the way through.
● The Greater One is in there, and He’ll put you over, make you a success, and bring you out.
● The spiritual man knows this, but the baby only knows he has had an experience.
● God has made us meet and given us the ability to witness and enjoy our inheritance.
● Deliverance and redemption are our inheritance.
● We have been delivered out of Satan’s authority and translated into the kingdom of God’s dear Son.
● Satan has no authority over you, and we must not let him take any.
Governed by the Word
● You are in the place of God’s protection and care where you feed upon the bread of heaven.
● The Word of God is the bread—Jesus said man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God.
● The manna of heaven is the Word of God.
● As you feed on this Word, you will grow up spiritually into the image and stature of the Son of God.
● You won’t get there by prayer alone, fasting, self-denial, experiences, visions, revelations, or spiritual gifts.
● These things have their place and purpose, but the Bible tells you exactly how to get there.
● Spiritual growth comes by the knowledge of the Word.
● The spiritual man is the one in whom the Word has gained ascendancy over his mind and body.
● It has brought him into harmony with the will of God because the Word of God is the will of God.
Love is the first fruit of the human spirit when you are born-again. It’s not the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
The Right Diet
● You must have the right diet if you are going to grow spiritually.
● The entire Word of God is our spiritual food, but particularly the New Testament.
● We live under the New Covenant, not the Old Covenant, so some Old Testament things don’t apply to us.
● Certain sections of the New Testament are written especially for the Church.
● The Gospels were written for the benefit of the world and sinners as well as believers.
● The Epistles are letters written directly to the Church and should be our main diet.
● The author spent 90% of his study time in the Epistles throughout his ministry.
● The Epistles contain the message written specifically to believers.
● Paul plainly stated about the mystery of this revelation that it was “now” made manifest.
● Let your diet be mainly made up of the Epistles written to the Church.
● Particularly focus on 1 Corinthians 13 and the First Epistle of John.
● Get an Amplified translation of 1 Corinthians 13 to help you understand it better.
● Feed on all five chapters of 1 John.
● In these two writings, the great love teachings are unveiled and revealed.
● John repeatedly emphasizes knowing we have passed from death to life because we love the brethren.
● John also emphasizes that those who have the world’s goods and see a brother in need should show compassion.
● “Whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected.”
● “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.”
● God’s nature is Love, and as His child you have that Love nature in you.
● That Love nature must be fed for it to grow.
● Unless you feed where love is found, it will not grow and develop in your life.
● If every Christian would live in 1 Corinthians 13 and 1 John, they would become so different they’d have to pinch themselves.
● Their homes would become so different it would be absolutely amazing.
● “Love seeketh not her own”—babes are always seeking their own.
● Babies always quarrel over what belongs to them.
● The quarrels and divorces in our homes reveal the babyhood state of the modern church.
● Those who walk in love and have matured in love would not act this way.
● This babyhood condition can be remedied only by studying, feeding upon, and practicing the Word of God.
● Study the plan of redemption and find out what you are in Christ.
● Find out what Christ is in you and your standing before God.
● Find out that you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.
● Understand what Jesus did in His death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and seating at the Father’s right hand.
● Know what He is doing right now in His present-day ministry as Intercessor.
● This knowledge will help you grow out of babyhood into a full-grown man in Christ.
● Whatever we have from God, we received by grace.
● Every believer has a measure of grace that will meet every emergency.
● Every believer has the same new birth, eternal life, love of God, grace, and Holy Spirit.
● Every believer has the same Intercessor and the same Heavenly Father.
● If all this is true, there is no reason to be weak and remain babies.
● God never planned for you to remain a baby spiritually any more than physically or mentally.
● It would be sad for a child to live twenty-five years without growing physically or mentally.
● It is equally sad for Christians to be forty years old and still spiritual babies—selfish, sensitive, easily hurt, envious, and jealous.
● A deacon of thirty years cried like a baby because the pastor visited a newborn convert more than him.
● A deacon got so mad about someone sitting in his pew that he wouldn’t speak to his wife for three days.
● Such men are not fit to be deacons and are not walking in spiritual maturity.
● God wants us to grow spiritually and never planned for us to remain babies.
Fruit of the Human Spirit
● Love is the first fruit of the human spirit when you are born again.
● The translators were wrong to put a capital “S” in Galatians 5:22—it refers to the human spirit.
● Jesus said, “I am the vine, ye are the branches.”
● The fruit grows on the branches, and we are the branches, not the Holy Spirit.
● The fruit of the spirit is fruit that grows in your life because of the Life of Christ within.
● We know we have passed from death to life because we love the brethren.
● This is the fruit of the recreated, born-again human spirit.
● If you are saved, you have each fruit of the spirit in you.
● Romans 5:1 says, “Being justified by faith, we have peace with God.”
● If you are born again, love is in your inward man and spirit.
● You may not be practicing it, but it is there.
● To grow and develop out of babyhood, you must feed this love nature on the Word of God.
● You must exercise this love nature in the arena of life.
● You will not grow in love any other way.
● Praying “God, give me love” without acting on God’s Word is like twiddling your thumbs.
● Recognize that because you are born of God, you are born of Love.
● You are made a partaker of the divine nature, God’s nature, which is Love.
● Then feed that love nature on the Word of God and put it into practice.
● Love is absolutely to govern the heart life of the Church.
● 1 Corinthians 10:24 says, “Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.”
● When love does not rule, motives become distorted, and conduct becomes abnormal.
● The body rules the spirit and brings the mind into captivity to earthly things.
Renewing the Mind
● Romans 12:2 says, “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
● The primal need of man is to have his mind renewed.
● Another translation says, “Be not conformed to this age.”
● Don’t think as this generation or this world thinks.
● Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
● When your mind is renewed by the Word of God, you will know the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.
● Until your mind is renewed, you will stay in the state of babyhood.
● Colossians 3:10 says the new man is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him.
● It is deeply important that the believer’s mind be renewed after the image of Jesus.
● This is one reason God sent the Holy Ghost to be our Teacher and Guide.
● The Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth as the Spirit, through the Word, guides us into reality.
● Ephesians 4:23-24 says, “Be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
● Putting on the new man ends envyings, jealousies, strifes, and divisions.
● Therefore you would no longer be a babe in the carnal state.
● Paul wrote Romans 12 to born-again, Spirit-filled believers.
● The new birth and baptism of the Holy Ghost do not automatically affect your body or mind.
● These are spiritual experiences, not mental or physical experiences.
● After being born again and filled with the Holy Ghost, it is up to you to do something with your body and mind.
● The real you is the man on the inside—the spirit man.
● You are to present your body to God.
● You are to get your mind renewed through the Word of God.
● This happens by meditating on and practicing the Word of God.
The Bible says for us to examine ourselves. It doesn’t say for me to examine you, or for you to examine me. But to examine yourself.
A Word of Encouragement
● Don’t become discouraged because you don’t become a full-grown Christian overnight, just as you didn’t become a full-grown human overnight.
● The Bible says to examine yourself, not for you to examine others or for others to examine you.
● In some areas you may be growing well and maturing, but in other areas you may still be a baby.
● In yet other areas, you may be in the childhood state, and most believers are in the same boat.
● No one is fully grown up, fully spiritual, or already perfected in love.
● But praise God, we are on our way to maturity.
● Don’t be discouraged because you don’t get there overnight, any more than you would expect to graduate from school after one week.
● You stayed in the first grade and were tickled to get into the second grade the next year.
● You will not grow up spiritually overnight any more than you grew up mentally or physically overnight.
● But there is no excuse for not growing at all.
● The author’s greatest concern is whether he knows more about God and has grown any this year above last year.
● He believes in going on to perfection even though he’s not perfect yet.
● He won’t stop or quit just because he didn’t grow up last week or because he made a mistake or failed.
● The full-grown Christian won’t quit either because he knows Jesus is right there to represent him at the Father’s right hand.
● Every step out of love is sin, according to the New Covenant.
● Too often we think sin only means breaking one of the Ten Commandments, but that was the Old Covenant.
● The new law of the New Covenant is that we love one another.
● Every word spoken out of love is sin, and every act done out of love is sin.
● But the Epistle to the Church says, “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
● As we look back on our spiritual growth, we thought we were doing pretty well in our babyhood stages.
● We met human standards and thought we were practically sinless.
● But as we grow up spiritually and look back, we see we were sinning more than we thought.

● God is patient with us and helps us along the way.
● We should encourage one another and keep pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus.
